About this event

We have been supporting Blackdog Outdoors since 2021, giving 30p from every bag of coffee sold so they can host free events like this to encourage people to reconnect with the great outdoors for better mental health and wellbeing.

Many of thier events are introductory adult-only events aimed at:

  • People new to the activity
  • People that used to spend time in the outdoors but, for whatever reason, have lost the confidence to do so
  • People that are looking to meet like-minded people so that they can plan their own adventures

Event Details

Rising dramatically above Morecambe BayWarton Crag marries stunning habitats that have seen the reserve become part of a network of nationally important wildlife conservation sites. Limestone grassland, limestone pavement and ancient semi-natural woodland boast thin, free-draining soils and rugged, rocky outcrops that support an extra special array of species of flora, fauna and wildlife.

Starting in the Nature Reserve car park, you can take some time to explore the information boards detailing the wildlife and birds of the crag while the group assembles. We then take a short walk through the woodland to the start of our track. As we gain elevation the panoramic views will open up across Morecambe Bay. We follow the natural line of the rocky Limestone outcrops to the rocking stones which afford a great view from the top of the crag.

From here we head up a little further to the flat summit of the crag which sits at 490 meters above sea level – here we will find an OS trig point and a beacon. We will then take a short circular diversion along a permissive path to the Three Brothers before walking along the old drover’s road until we reach Crag Road which will return us to our starting point. We will then return to our vehicles and drive to Carrington’s Coffee for a free coffee and social time to complete the event!

Expected Terrain –  Rocky paths, some steep walking, and muddy tracks are to be expected following any periods of rain. There is also a short section of road walking. Due to the rocky and steep terrain, this walk is unfortunately inaccessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs and those with limited mobility.

Why should we do Outdoor Activities?

The role of sport and recreation in improving mental health is now becoming increasingly clear. The effects of outdoor activities can include stress reduction, improved mood, improved self-esteem and improved health and general well-being. The real challenge lies in promoting the idea of “green exercise” to those that will benefit from it, providing opportunities for those people to take up outdoor activities, and supporting and encouraging them as they set out on their individual adventures. We have established Blackdog Outdoors to provide this service.
